Introduction
The ecological problems we have to deal with in order to maintain our
environment are colossal. Imagine that in 50 years there may not be a
source of
fresh water in the hemisphere not hopelessly clogged with Zebra
mussels, and I
haven't touched on the subjects of global warming or atmospheric
pollution. We
cannot win this war, only forestall it. What is the value of life if
there is
no larger power, if we are only a product of the laws of physics in the
midst
of eternal implosion or explosion, if our species really is just a
parasite the
earth caught long ago, if all traffic is terminal?
The only real raison de vivre is to
make the joy outweigh the sorrow for as many living species as
possible. The
only obligation in life is to increase the quality of life for our
fellow
being, and to enjoy to the maximum this great gift of coincidence that
has
allowed us life.
